A tiny village in the early 18^th century, Stromness grew to be a major trading port as the Napoleonic Wars diverted shipping round the North of Scotland. Through whaling, fishing and its role as a base for the Hudson's Bay Company Stromness became a thriving community with its merchants houses built gable on to their private piers and a narrow winding main street.
